Put on the bottom part at least as the holes for the screws have to be in the carb, no splashy then.

You do not need to remove the carb. It is totally serviceable from the top.

Lew... Really? I've seen these engines run before without the breather housing on top before. But I'll give it a shot before going more invasive.

Sam... Good to know, thanks. I've never really worked inside one of these carbs. I've only ever removed them to sell when I do part outs. I have worked on the vertical shaft ones though, which is completely different.

I agree, without them holes you'll go thru hell trying to get the screws in.

The top you can leave off, the bottom part has the gasket that seals off the holes on the top of carb, the holes are connected to the fuel bowl somehow, no gasket on it will do like you described.

Lew... you’re a genius. I did what you suggested and it fired right up and runs beautiful. I ran it about 10 minutes and now I’m going to drain the oil again and flush it out and put new oil and put a new filter on it before I run it some more.

I’ve put about an hour on the rebuild now just driving around the yard and testing the 44c deck a little. I’m going to have to pull the tunnel cover off and look around because the linkage for forward and reverse seems sticky. And reverse sounds like something is rubbing the driveshaft. There are no drips anywhere, and it drives nice other than these few small issues. She will make a good worker for someone.
