Default Cub cadet 122 engine upgrade or rebuild?

I have an old 122 that I have been slowly rebuilding. I have yet to do anything with the engine and I am curious if there is an easy upgrade to a newer engine design? Can someone give me an idea of options. I would consider buying a rebuilt engine or sending mine out for rebuild, but I would prefer a newer more modern engine if possible. It has a kohler engine. I will post pics later on.

You really can't "upgrade" that engine. There are no better engines than a Kohler K series. It would be unwise to go to anything else. Yes, I am "forreel".

x2 "forreel"! Agree with Jon, I rebuilt a K301 in my 125. Awesome power for a 12hp engine and a hydro. I would recommend a rebuild.

(side note): If you don't want that engine, you could send it to me.

Thank you for the input. I realize it is a good engine. I am just looking for all of my options. Can you recommend someone that rebuilds them or exchanges for rebuilt?

I'm sure jmechs can help you get the engine sorted out. One of our more knowledgeable people when it comes to the k series as well as other engines.

Talk to Jon (J-mech) about rebuilding your engine. I gave him a k341 to rebuild and have absolutely no complaints so far.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
