Snow Thrower Refresh
Wanting to do all I can to make sure I have no break downs with my snow thrower this winter (if we get any snow).
During the week I don't get much time to do any work for myself but last week I did squeeze some time out to get this thrower disassembled. This weekend I cleaned all the paint and rust from the inside of the housing and the chute, got a couple coats of paint back on them and two good coats of slip plate, I got the flutes on the auger straightened and I got the old grease in the gearbox cleaned out. I am very pleased that there is nothing on this thrower that is worn badly, just a few things that were starting to show some wear. I have checked all related parts for breakage/wear and the only things I could find were, the transfer shaft was a little galled, the small sprocket was a little loose on the shaft, the key-way in the gearbox output shaft was wollered a little, the chain was pretty rusty and a little worn and the auger bearings didn't feel very good. All the parts that are going to be replaced are either here or ordered and on their way. I have a good little bit of welding to do this week so I will try to get ski's welded onto the "runners" and some braces welded to the ends of the flutes on the auger to give them a little extra strength. I'll try to get some more pictures loaded this week as time allows. Please understand that this is a "refresh" and not a "restore" for the time being, I'm not too worried about how this blower looks, for now it's all about how well it works.

Good job on the auger,
It's always good to know that a piece of equipment is going to work when called upon.

I just used a hammer and a 24 oz hammer head as a dolly.
In all fairness, it straightened out a lot easier than I thought it would, but it did take some time (probably about 3 hours, but not working very hard most of the time). I have another one that is a considerable amount worse than this one was, I thought it would be junk, but as easy as this one was to straighten, I may end up refreshing it one of these days too.

wow
you are too modest! My auger had some bad spots and I banged on it quite a bit and never got it looking as good as yours. Nice work.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
