Default Deck question..

The 42" deck on my 3184 has a broken spring retainer 'nub'. You know on the tensioner pulley there's a spring that wraps around the shaft and it's secured to the deck by a retainer piece. Well in trying to remove tension in order to remove the belt the part of the retainer closest to the deck snapped off.
So I'm left with this nubbin barely poking out of the top of the deck, not enough to hang the retainer on to keep tension on the spring.

So my thought is, I could drill out that nubbin, then also drill out the corresponding part of the retainer that is poking through the hole on the spring itself. Then bolt that 'spring hole' to the deck via grade 8 bolt.

That would relieve me of having to disassemble the retainer and spring assembly and replace the retainer at a cost of about $20.
I hope this makes sense as I formulated these thoughts at work based on mental pics of the deck

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
