Default 1720? Should I?

Hey guys, local add a guy is selling his 1720 hydro with mower and bagger for $250. I'm not really the type to go for such a newer generation cub, I have a 102 and a 122. Anyways looking for something for the wife. She doesn't like the clutch or gear so I was gonna try a hydro for her to mow and maybe collect leaves. 1720 looks to be in good condition kept well maybe even garaged. But transmission problems, no forward, no reverse... Is it worth $250 to guess on a fix to tranny or what? thanks

The 1720 is a cheap LT, not a GT. I would avoid it if it has transmission problems, no telling what they will cost or if the parts will even be available.

Like Tim said, save your money. Plenty of real garden tractors out there. I’m not sure I would pay anything for one of those.

I bought one inexpensively for the MV-18 engine only, and scrapped the rest.
Not much of a lawn tractor in my opinion.
The spindles on the deck are the newer style with tapered bearings, so that is a good thing.
It is considered a throw away machine,--- and with a bad tranny, like most are,
it's just worth parts for someone who needs them.
There are better hydro cubs out there for your $250 and worth fixing.
I'd pass on it for what you want.

Thanks Paps, I knew it was kinda a cheap model but trying to find a hydro that the wife would like. I’ll still do all the work with my other two. Should I maybe look into a quite line? Thanks for the reply.

1864. Tilt wheel power steering will make the wife happy.

The 1320 we passed along about two years ago preformed very well! Never a whimper in either the Briggs single cylinder or the hydro drive transmission. As truth be told, this 1320 had less hick-up's than our new '12 CC LGT 1050.

The 1610 got for Ma, its beautiful! Strong engine, all the safety features and instrumentally, a great performer. Nope, this 1610 is experiencing bad transmission problems! Not sure if it's near the same as the 1720, but that'll be the day when you buy that 1720!

Lots of recommendations for the "newer" Cub Cadet stuff, and for good reason. If you find a nice 124, or Quiet Line in good condition, take a few moments to check them over!

NO! Is the final answer about the 1720!

unless you can get it for like, 35$, heeehe

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
