Default Engine pulley loose - LTX 1042 KW

Good evening all,

After mowing today, I was idling the tractor while blowing off the clippings and I saw the drive pulley was "wobbling" at idle. After shutting down, I noticed that the split washer on the bottom of the pulley wasn't flat (i.e. tight) and there was play in the pulley.

So I got out the large vise grips to clamp to the shaft above the pulley to keep it from spinning to tighten this bolt. After 10 minutes of the bolt spinning, it does not appear to be getting any tighter.

Is something spinning internally on this engine pulley that I can't see? If so, how do I tighten this bolt?

Possibly you need to remove the bolt and see if the threads are stripped?

If I was you I do that:
Remove the belt, unscrew that bolt (2) check the condition of his threads, remove the pulley (13) and the spacer (31) check for any damage to the pulley keyway and structure, check the spacer condition, check the crankshaft keyway, use a 7/16-20 tap to "refresh" the shaft threads.

If at this stage you didn't find anything was wrong, put a new 7/16-20X3.5" gr5 bolt, go to your local church and light a candle, may God be with you, Amen.

PS: The OEM bolt got red threadlock on it...(http://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/s...rocessARIParts)

So last night I did notice that there is what appears to be a keyseat at the top of the pulley. Does this indentation act as the "key" on the inside of the pulley?

The Kawasaki (FR600V) engine in your tractor got a keyway crankshaft so the pulley must have a keyway somewhere! To my knowledge no vertical crankshaft engine in a lawn mower tractor have tapered shaft. The are cheap but not "That" cheap.

Just came back from local mower shop; he had a Grade 8 bolt in stock, so I went with it.

Old bolt did show signs of stripping, but I did not have time nor a tap set, so I installed new bolt. This one appeared to tighten up, but I'm not happy with the wobble at the bottom (deck pulley) end. Either will replace pulley this winter or will take to shop for permanent repair. But looks like I can finish this mowing season.

Thanks for all your input!

Dave

So the saga continues....drive belt broke today when the wife was mowing. Dropping the engine pulley to get ready for the new belt and I see a lot of damage to the keyseat on the engine shaft. But if the key in the engine pulley is OK, I'm not too worried. Looking inside the pulley, I see the "key" - it literally looks like someone dropped in a short weld as the key! (see photo)
Should key in the pulley truly be square-shouldered? Or is this the result of the damaged keyseat on the shaft and my earlier wobble issue?

Thats trouble.. the key made that mark there.. Not suppose to look like that.. The key way should be the same front to back.

Not sure if you know how to weld but you could run a bead to fill in the void then you need to grind the keyway and shaft back into shape.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
