Crab grass extermination

Hello
what is the best way to control crab grass? with all the rain here in PA this summer the lawn was growing rapidly. I mowed the grass lower and invited crab grass and clover to really take a hold.What is effective treatment that has worked for you's? Thanks

No really,you have to put crabgrass killer down early in the spring.And another application a month later to really kill it.I don't do that on my front lawn as I have a well there.lots of shade too keeps it in control;
I find leaving the grass tall helps cut down on it .It loves water though.

Just my 2 cents but if it's green and fits under the Haban it must be grass and I mow it. I'd be happy with crab grass on the hill behind my house, it beats dirt. Been trying for 2 years to get anything green to grow.

I hate crab grass

You got to find out when the pro's start laying down pre-emergence(not spelled right but?)

I use a bottle sprayer that hooks up to my hose. Its got bradleaf weed control & crabgrass stuff in it. Firsy week of 70's or over & I spray my yard. And like darkminion stated wait 2 to 4 weeks & hit it again. But again must be over 70. It's been 2 years now & quite happy with my results. 1 or 2 spots this year but,?.

I sprayed 2-4-D Amine on the grass in the late spring. I got so-so control of clover.

I just hit it again, this time with 2-4-D Ester. WOW, ALL the nut grass is DEAD. Most of the crab grass is looking poorly. They say crab grass is not killed by 2-4-D, but, my lawn says different.

My grass (where there was grass) now looks like I laid down new turf this year.

Be sure to use the Ester on a ZERO wind day, or the wife might miss the dead flowers.

We gotta get Sam Mac to put some compost on that hillside, then the grass (or at least weeds! ) will grow.

Maybe we could find him some wire, posts and a hay feeder and you could just keep your horse there for a while! LOL.

LOL, well I thunk it over and maybe try a pre emergant in the spring,mow it at 3 inches and hope in a couple years I get I get it somewhat under control.

After a new septic field was installed in my front lawn, all I had was clay. No grass over most of the yard. I added about 10 tons of topsoil, spread thin. No grass would grow, even after spreading 12 bags of fertilizer. A friend brought several bags of his grass clippings, which contained crabgrass. Believe it or not, I now have the thickest greenest lawn, mostly due to crabgrass. I'd much rather look at a green crabgrass lawn than clay! When I get some regular grass established, I will then go after the crabgrass, but not this year or next!

As bad a crab grass is, and considering what I have dumped into my garden, it is a wonder I do not have crab grass in the garden!!
