I would suggest you resist the temptation for further tinkering as long as it's running well.

I may just do that when my Champions start to go.. They have less then 20 hours on them and still look like new (sharp edges).

Probably the best words of wisdom..

I no doubt need to fix that slack in the exhaust valve, but other than that perhaps it will be ok..

Better check that slack. I can't remember which engine, but I've seen the stud pull out of the head on the rocker. May have been the Kohler V-twin, but it may have been the Vangaurd... I don't remember.

I finally checked it a little bit ago. Popped open the valve cover, noticed the push rod moved out of position.. Like the top ball was no longer pushing in that little cap on the screw it was resting in the edge of the actual rocker.. Once I popped it back in place and checked slack it was within tolerance. Oddly this happen once before last year.. completely popped out of place.. Engine started back firing hard..

But I started it up and running fine still! Hope it stays that say!

If the push rod is popping out of the rocker you have some sort of problem. My guess is you have a valve hanging up. Or you have an over heating condition causing the valve to stick in the open position. I suggest that you find out what is causing the problem before it gets more expensive. Did you check the valve clearances, or did you just pop the push rod back in place?

I honestly just pushed the rod back in place.

I set the valve clearance last year.. thinking it was still ok.. The engine has less then 30 hours since I adjusted all the valve clearance.. Maybe I screwed up on that valve and should redo it..

I probably should also double check that the push rod is not bend as well. Some reason I recall an issue with the rockers and push rods on these models..

Another question.. Sorry I have so many!

I noticed with the oil fill cap off and engine running.. Lots of air was blowing out! I assume this is probably do to failing head gaskets? I am not too worried.. I don't have a pressure tester anymore.. but I figure it's piston rings or head gasket.. and since the exhaust is not blowing smoke.. I assume the better bet is head gaskets.. My assumptions good on this?

The task does not not look too bad.. Should be fun.. When I get some time I'll purchase the new head gaskets..

Thank you all again!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
