29 Volts AC is just about perfect. I use Kohler part # 41-403-10-S regulator. You can Google the part number. It's a very easy conversion. I'll try to post better pics and more details tomorrow.

Quick and dirty, you cut the wires off the old regulator and crimp on a couple new female slip on spade connectors. The AC leads from the stator go to the out side of the Kohler VR and the DC output goes to the center. This pic is from a Kubota in a 2182 that I did the same thing to. Wire colors are different but you'll get the idea.

Thanks everyone for the input. Just waiting on a part now. I'll report back with the results, but I am optimistic that a new VR will solve the problem. Fingers crossed.

IF......you ordered the Kohler V/R, bear in mind, that this device has "fins" on it and needs to be cooled. Thus, this is why Cub Cadet placed it in the shroud to be cooled by the Flywheel Fan. This may not be possible on your model of tractor, as a second option, make sure you mount it on a large piece of metal so as to work as a "heat sink".

Yep you want to keep them as cool as possible. This on is on a Vanguard. I mounted it with a spacer under the mounting bolts so that it can get air behind it also.

Thanks primarily to this thread, I have successfully replaced the VR in my 1641 and she's happily charging once again (hasn't charged in probably the last 8 yrs or so). I ended up buying a cheap (<$20) aftermarket VR off eBay since I didn't want to spend OEM prices without knowing the results.

Since these seem to be susceptible to heat, would it make sense to relocate it somewhere behind the engine, like under the battery? Seems to me that bolted up to the tin keeps it hotter than it needs to be.

Last one I did I mounted it to the dash tower on the cool side of the engine.

I also replaced with a ~14 dollar aftermarket unit from amazon. I figured it was worth a shot for the price. If it fails again in the near future, I'll consider switching to a better one. Thanks for all info.
