The engine will not run very well upside down.

It may even fall out.

flip it over the right way, and I have a lead on (2) Kohler 14s (K321) out of Cubs
his reply to me was that they aren't stuck, missing starter/gens an something else (I forget what that was) in Indiana (odom) Odon? was the name of the town, $75/ea, can look back in Email and get back to you// IDK if PTO clutches are with them or not....

Probably not. I though about it. I saw one done but I don't think I'm going to attempt it. I'd rather just find a K321 to put back in it. There is another 149 not too far away though that has an engine. The body is a disaster though. Parts tractor maybe.

Will they ship? I have no plans of driving that far.

I dunno. I have a wanted ad on another site and this was info that I got from an email reply to that. I can PM you the info on it if you want since I put the tractor that I wanted an engine for up for sale.

You might want to talk to olds45512 here as he pm'd me about a 16 HP Cub cadet spec Kohler somewhere in PA, a bit more expensive but at least in the same state as you are and supposed to run. Might be closer to a drop in so better value? I dunno. Just a suggestion.

I spotted one about 60 miles from me. It needs some work but all there except carb from a Cub 1650. Is that easier to get in a 149 than something custom? Or does it have to be a 1X9? This one has a gear starter. I know I would need to make wiring changes for the charging system differences. Other than that would it fit?

the block would go right in, cuz the 1650 had the narrow base block like yours (most all cubs did) that seems to be the most important part. Mounting was different in the 1650 than the 1X9, not sure if the gear starter would cause a fitment issue/ but I'm thinking not, the 149 and 1650 share the same frame... I just did the engine overhaul on a 1200 (gear drive I know but same series machine as the 1650) and I have a 129 to put back together and get going soon so I too will be finding out. I know the 1650 originally had an electric PTO clutch and the 149 had a mechanical one.
I have not yet worked on enough Cubs between the different models to know for sure.
I do know this; given 2 engines in equal condition, the closer to you that one can be found, and not having to be shipped will probably be a better deal because you can SEE what you are getting so you can say "no thanks" if you get there and find out it is a turd, not so easy buying something from a distance. unless you have someone you can trust to check it out near the location and can hold it for you, and possibly help get it to you.... I wish I could find a narrow base 14 to 16HP Kohler near me that isn't in pieces.

Thanks for the info. I'm evaluating options. There's tons of crap for sale around here right now.

The 1X00/50 and the 1X8/9 frames while similar, are quite different in the engine compartment. See below:

You can put a 16hp in the 1X8/9 frame.... I.E. the 169, but it needs to be a non electric starter. Switching everthing over to the other style is too much work. Wiring harness will have to be changed. Linkage for the mechanical clutch removed. Wiring for a PTO installed. Charging system is different. An AQS engine can be switched over to a an A, but it's easier to do during disassembly/overhaul.

I don't think that would be too much work (for me anyway). I'm fine with wiring and stuff, that't no big deal. I have all the parts but an engine already. I have a yard full of parts tractors and I'm not afraid to use them.

As a side note, we have a soon to be junked minivan and my wife actually suggested yesterday I try putting the V6 in the 149. That's one conversion I think I will avoid... I'm don't think I can get the PTO pulley to line up with the mule. I love that woman.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
