Fix for starter that intermittenly engages?

1872, is there parts, or something I can do to fix the issue with the starter gear intermittently NOT engaging the flywheel, or just replace starter?

Make sure it is clean and then apply a non liquid graphite dry lube to it. A normal liquid lube will work for a while, but in a mowing application will attract dirt surely making the problem worse.

Does it spin or just click?

I had one that clicked but the fault was not the solenoid relay. The starter had a bad internal ground I think, and an external ground fixed it.

It spins great, just doesnt engage the starter gear into the flywheel gear at times.

Should I take it off & take the gear off to do this?

Try to do it on the engine. No need to remove the gear. I've done a couple with success.
