Default Engine rebuild ?

The engine is a Kolher 7 hp in a 72. It's using oil and blowing smoke when cold. The question is whether replacing the rings is adequate. Boring the cylinder is probably the best option but that means finding a shop to do it and the expense might not be worth it.

Any one with experience on this subject?

P.S. - this machine is also used to blow snow so I only have a short timeframe between lawn season and snow season.

Replacing the rings is never adequate. Find a shop and bore it. Grind the crank, get a new rod. Complete overhaul done correctly will last years. Do it "cheap" and it may not make it through the winter.

YES, if you have a time a machine. Not made in a long time. Find a good machine shop and spend the money if you would like to continue on with the tractor.

You can purchase a rebuilt motor. I sell them, but I don't have a 7hp rebuilt and ready to go. Kustom Lawn and Garden also sells them, but they also build to order.

Thanks for all your advice. I found a local machine that will bore it. Any idea of the overhaul kit number that I need or how do I find out?

I buy my overhaul kits aftermarket from this seller:

http://stores.ebay.com/The-Mans-One-...=p4634.c0.m322

I usually just call him and place my order. You have to take the motor to a shop first and find out how much it needs bored, and what size the crank will need turned to, then order the kit. Buy the complete kit.

Well.... maybe. Depends on what all else you do to the engine, and how high RPM you're planning to run. If it's just a "stocker" and under 4K RPM, then by all means yes.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
