I get a brown build-up on my exhaust! Something I have to take care of every day! (Sorry!)

One more question. I hear something rattling around inside the muffler, I think a chunk of carbon. Could that cause any problems other than making an annoying noise?

It's likely the baffle loose. I really doubt it's a chunk of carbon.
Can it cause issues? It can..... but probably won't. Only real issue is likely just the noise will drive you nuts. From the pics you posted, I'd say it's time for a new muffler anyway. Might just replace it. Probably be a lot quieter too.

It was a different used muffler. Before I put it on, I heard something in it. I got a lot of black dust and a few bigger chunks out, which is what made me think it was a piece of carbon. Do they still make mufflers for these?

Might have been an old wasp nest covered in black carbon.

Yes, they still make mufflers for them, lol. You can get one from Cub Cadet, or an aftermarket company like Stens and Prime Line. Look up the part number and look on ebay. Don't buy a super cheap one, they are tin can thin and not quiet at all. But you don't have to get the like $60 one from Cub Cadet that is, unless you want to, they are very good. Middle of the road price. Stens seem to be OK. Nelson are also good and may have been who made them originally.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
