Another Newbie Question Sorry
Hello all. I am looking at buying a 2004 LT2180 over a new Box Store Mower. 1 1/2+/- acres. for the most part flat and still working on the lawn for grass. right now it is mostly weed and clover. Also mow down to a creek and a small field. Tow an 4x8 trailer to pick up dead trees, rocks and limbs. Now plowing or blowing. 1/2 acre garden that I would like to get a disc or something to run thru during the winter months. Any opinions? Thanks in advance?

LT is like profanity around here. We frown on it.

Gave up LT's in the '70's.
GT is the only way to go. I might add we used push reel mowers around the barracks at Camp Lejeune. That was back in the 60's.

My two cents: I have a place that sounds very similar to what you have described, and I use my equipment very similar to what you have described that you will be doing. I have had this place for 20 years and over that time I have turned over probably 100 LT/GT's because I like to find clunkers, fix them up, and pass them on to someone who needs something dependable at a reasonable price. So that being said, I feel that have some pretty good experience in the sub-super GT arena and I usually have multiple units of all brands on hand at any particular time.
Therefore my opinion is this: For your needs right now, probably ANYTHING could fill the bill, from a Murray riding mower to A Cub Cyclops. So if you are getting a tremendous deal on the LT2180 and it is in beautiful condition, I say go for it. But remember this: over the long haul, like say the next 8 years, given the same maintenance techniques, time will take less of a toll on the larger tractors. If you see your situation changing in the future where maybe you will own multiple tractors, get something for right now that will get the job done and watch for something better. But, if your tractor is going to be an "only son" for many a year, get a "beast"! |

If you have the mechanical capability to do some repairs if needed for your projected use I would look for something like a 782 up to a 1864 garden tractor. The 782 is nearing 40 years old so if you go that route it will more than likely need a fair amount of work to be dependable. The 1864 is newer and might be easier to find in good operational condition. Both will do most anything you ask of them and when good running condition should last for many more years. Many on here think the 1864 is the best Cub Cadet ever built because of its features. Do some research on this forum for some ideas of how members have repaired and rebuilt some of the older Cubs. I have a 782 and also a 1872 that I have rebuild and repowered and will put either of them up against most of what is available today. They run, ride and cut grass very well and both should be around for my grandkids to use.
Good luck in your search for a Cub Cadet. If you run across something let us know and we will try to help you out. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
