GT1554 keeps throwing deck belt...can you help?
I recently bought a GT1554 with 54" deck that appears well cared for but it keeps throwing deck belts. the previous owner said it happened sometimes but not constantly as it has done with me. I've only been trying it on very dry grass about 3" long on a relatively flat ground so shouldn't be any undue strain.
I dropped the deck and when I put a level across the pulleys they are level with the exception of the one turning the left blade, nearest the idler pulley - that one sits about 3/8" lower than all the other pulleys. Is that how it should be? it seems a lower pulley would increase the angle when the deck is lowered for mowing (I set it at 3) and only encourage the belt to come off. I put a new belt on but that didn't solve the problem. the tension spring on the idler appears in good condition but the mower is new to me so don't know if it provides the tension needed. so my first question is....are the deck pulleys supposed to be level on a 54" deck or is the left blade pulley designed to be lower? previous owner said he had not changed the pulleys but he is the second owner so not sure before that time. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

First, welcome to OCC....
Since you have posted no pictures, I can only respond with General Statements. Usually when belts are being thrown, it falls into one of two areas. (A) The wrong belt is being used. (B) There is a mis-alignment of the Pulleys, and/or Idlers.

do the blades line up underneath? that would rule out bent deck. may just have a pulley on upside down or something got put together wrong in the bearing assembly.

Anyway, For what its worth, this is a picture I have of the 54" deck on a tractor I just sold. While I had it, no belts were ever thrown off. I know the outer spindle pulleys are covered in the picture but I just can't imagine them not all being on the same plane. Are you sure you have the right belt and that it is installed like mine. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
