Default Did Kohler ever make....

A magnum A, or AS or AQS suffix cast iron single? If so I'd like to find an M 16 or at least an M14 like that.

Yes they did, here's a pic of the tag on my 1211 engine. The 1050 also has a mag aqs but it's 10hp.

Well, there ya go. NO mention of a "A" suffix in the Kohler Magnum Service Manual.

No you wouldn't. They aren't as good a motor as the point style engines. If you could adjust the timing, they would be. You can get an old K to run a lot better than a Mag.

I just took an M12 apart and the block is stamped K301. Gotta love interchangeable parts. Mines got balance gears inside too.

I have heard of people putting the Mag parts onto a K before. and either leaving the points and pushrod in place so as not to have an oil leak or else they put something like a small freeze plug in the pushrod hole.

My thoughts here are kinda like when HEI, etc first came out on cars, and people would replace their points dist. with an HEI setup.... though I know that advance and timing can be set with an HEI on a car engine....

Although on any single given application, you don't have to mess with the points very often, and I get that. but I have also dropped more than my share of screws down in the frame when I "do" have to mess with the points....

on the timing adjustment, yeah you can adjust the timing a bit on a K... but once tightened down, it stays the same... it ain't like it's a car or outboard where you can either play with the timing on the fly or in a car where you can change advance weights and springs and in some cases adjust the vacuum advance pod to alter the vacuum advance (which these Kohler engines don't even have in the 1st place) so to me the ability to (or not to) play with the timing on a K series is all but moot.
I just got done rebuilding a K301 from a 1200, and as I was playing with the crank endplay and having to take the bearing plate on and off a couple times is when I was thinking about finding a Magnum 16 if such an animal was available that would bolt into my 1650....

and Alvy, what are the plans for that M12? The last 2 previous Kohlers I have done were Magnums, an 8 and most recently, a 12. What are your plans for that M12? Are you parting it out?
I just got a K301 T (yeah... pull start--joy) from a garage sale yesterday, this engine has a magneto ignition rather than a battery ignition. and my thoughts of finding Magnum parts to convert that engine came back to mind.... so I wouldn't mind finding the parts (eventually) for that.
I will finish this post by saying that this pull start K301 wouldn't be going into a Cub because it doesn't have the narrow base-- unless I pull the base and find out that it is double drilled for either base like I have seen on some of my buddy's green and yellow tractors.

It's not anything like HEI, or a car. Stick with the K.
