Default Out with the old, in with the... older?

I've had a MTD Cub Cadet rear engine rider (1027) and last year added a 933R Wide Cut Walk-Behind but I've always wanted a gear drive IH Cub Cadet and I finally made the leap last weekend.

The old 1027 which has already donated its carburetor to my 933R and will soon donate its tires to my newest acquisition, a 1976 1000 QL. It runs great but needs some attention paid to the driveline (possible throw-out bearing problems).

Is that factory paint? You know if it is original, you are gonna get the "You Suck" award for this week. Regardless, looks to be a really nice machine, congrats--and post some more pics!

Thanks for all the kind words.

To answer a few questions, yes the paint is original and despite a few blemishes and a small dent on the right rear fender it is excellent shape. Everything seems to be original, down to the QL muffler and Isomounts.

Since there seems to be some interest I'll share a little more of the story about how I acquired it...

My CCC rear-engine rider is pretty much beat so I started looking for a suitable replacement. I grew up around a lot of IH products (uncle farmed with them and my dad had an old Farmall 300 and later a Cub Lo-Boy), so naturally I wanted an IH Cub Cadet. I found a few NF models that would have been decent restoration projects but I really wanted something I could use in a relatively short period of time (mainly as a back-up to my walk behind).

While perusing craigslist, I stumbled upon the 1000 at a local John Deere dealership. It looked great in the photos and was priced right at just $500, so I stopped off on my way home from work. It had been traded in on a new JD zero-turn and looked just as good in person as in the photos. The salesman started it up but shut it off a few seconds later. We talked price and agreed to an out-the-door price of $475 but I wanted to at least drive it (try out the clutch, engage the PTO, etc). When he tried to start it up, no luck. He kinda chalked it up to bad gas and said he'd have their service department look at it in the morning.

I got a call the next morning and the salesman said they didn't want to tie up the service department and offered it to me for $350. I stopped by after work, again and haggled a bit and purchased it as-is for $325 cash, out-the-door. We had a deal! I picked it up last Saturday and a couple of guys from the service department helped me roll it onto my trailer and I took it home.

Once I got it home, I popped off the hood sides and guess what... the gas shut off was closed! I pulled it open and it fired right up. Engine doesn't seem to vibrate much so perhaps the Isomounts are okay. Put it into gear and take off, though, and soon the vibration from the clutch/drive shaft starts - pretty much undriveable. The vibration only lets up if I slightly engage the clutch.

So that's where I'm at. I know I'm in for a clutch repair and have been studying some of the posts on this site. I'm sure once I pull the clutch assembly there will be lots of rookie questions for you all.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
