Model 1 Tiller disassembly
The tiller seizes at speed though it will turn by hand with a bit of unsettling noise. Also the bottom of the case was welded at some point without evidently ever being opened. So who knows what I will find inside.
Where I am at on this is right side tine shaft slipped off no problem. Concerning the collar on the main shaft, after much futile prying and heating I found advice on a similar thread to put a punch in the non set screw hole and try to turn it. That worked wonders and I got the the collar off the right side. Now for the other side, the tine shaft is somewhat "fused" to the main shaft I guess by movement of the pin. I tried to spin it but I couldn't really get a lot of leverage. I put a puller on it but it tightened up to a point where it was probably good to stop. I'm thinking maybe to drill it out? It seems a 3/4 in bit would be about right. Any tricks, thoughts? thanks! |

Got aN acetylene torch? Heat up the shaft a bit and pull harder....

All good advice,
a inexpensive air hammer works wonders, using a blunt chisel or punch in it. With heat and the puller, and the air chisel shocking it, it should come off. hit on the tines as they are harder material that the hub it is bolted to. I would not drill, it will weaken things. They are known to be tight, they been together/rusted a long time. |

I'm just thinkin' out loud, but if your gonna drill that with a 3/4'" bit you better either have arms like Paul Bunyan or a great medical plan. I also vote heat.

I don't understand what he is wanting to drill, or how it would even help....????
Tiller drive shaft is only either 3/4" or 1"..... if you're talking about the pin hole for the tine drive, it was only what, 3/8"? 5/16"?? Keep the drill in the toolbox. |

That's what I was thinking when I read that, what's he gonna drill??? I agree , no drill, more heat, a bigger hammer, and lots of patience.

Shear pins (what CC calls 'em ) anyway are 1/2"
The main shaft on my #2 is 1.25" you are dam luck to have gotten the one off that you did so easy!! |

Appreciate the suggestions. I thought I would provide an update. Current score: Tiller 23 Ed 3. All I have at the house is a Mapp gas torch. I tried that a few times with a large puller tightening with an impact wrench. Wouldn't budge. I looked into renting an Oxy Acetylene torch setup but they run about $100/day for the few places that do rent them. That didn't seem cost effective. A friend at work recommended a local shop. I took it there and one of their techs likes working on projects like this so I told him what I done so far and he agreed to take a look at it. They said check back in about two weeks, so we shall see. Thanks again and I'll update with the results.

Keep a good eye on Craigslist, I see torch sets for sale all the time in my area.
