48 inch 3 spindle deck refresh
I started to rebuild my 48" 3 spindle deck tonight. So far I have to replace the tensioner pulley bearing and the tensioner spring. The bearing is making funny noises (I told it to act serious and that didn't help) and the spring is broken.
I took apart one spindle and cleaned the bearings of grease, a few rollers have some pitting so I'm gonna replace them. I'll take the other two spindles apart tomorrow and see how they are. I didn't have any play in the bearings but I figured if I'm going to be rebuilding the deck I'll put fresh bearings in it. My spindles are the rebuildable type not the water pump bearings. I'm going to see if I can source the bearings, races, and seals locally. Now the tensioner pulley bearing, I can drill out the spot welds that hold the pulley halves together. That I have no problem with but what is the replacement bearing? This was my second season using the 48 inch deck. The metal is in good shape, just one spot about the size of a business card needs repaired. And that's because the previous owner did a crappy job patching a hole. I'll get some pictures as I do the rebuild, this is my winter project. After I get the deck done I'll work on the mule drive. Eventually I plan on restoring my 104.

Looking forward to the pictures sd38-2
Don;t know about the bearing for the tension pully ( i have never tried taking one apart). If you do get it apart there might be numbers on the bearing. Around here we have Applied industrial they can match up about any bearing. Good luck and keep us posted. |

I have the whole deck stripped down. I cut out two two studs that were broken. I'm going to cut out the previous owners bad repair on the sheet metal and fix it correctly. I have pictures, I just need to get them on my tablet so I can post them.

I know you said you wanted to source locally, but just in case, I was able to order Timken replacement tapered roller bearings for my 50" deck spindles from Amazon, for about $4 each. Outside races and seals sold separately. Hope this helps. If parts number would help, let me know...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
