By every matrix, the correct belt for the QA42A is part# IH-55053-C1. This belt measures 15/32 x 30 inches.
I actually have the 28-inch belt. It is part# 487043-R1. It looks like this is the belt for the CC-36 thrower.

At this point I'm going to assume I have the incorrect pulley on the 90 degree gear box. Maybe I just didn't notice it last year. There is no way a 30-inch belt goes on this unit, and the 28-inch belt is too short. I needs a 29-inch belt, which is an odd size for sure. Unless I have a speed-up pulley on there...which might not be a bad thing.
Update: I just measured the pulley. it is 4 1/2 inches. Yet the belt is too short. unbelievable....

At 4.5" I'm pretty sure that is original.... if not a little big. I was thinking it was smaller than that, but I'm not where I can measure one. If you have a new belt, and it is still too long, I really think you are overlooking something. But, if your sure, just change the belt to the one you need and be done with it.

Was there a resolution to this? I spent some time in the dark/cold last night poking around with my newly acquired QA-42A. I'm pretty sure the motor mounts are shot but I don't have the time right now to do a rehab and I really want to use the thrower
 In the meantime, I'm going to try the 29" belt as well.

Don't know what the po had the thrower mounted on, might have a pulley for a 5/8" belt on the gearbox.
You'll also want to be careful tightening the belt down, if your mounts are bad it won't be hard to pull the engine out of alignment with the drive shaft. Most QL owners will tell you that isn't a good thing.

Wow, I definitely mistyped, yes it's a QA42A. I haven't had a chance to peck around with it more- have more pressing issues (hytran leak- was a dribble but now it gushes when engine is running). Thought it was the filter but then saw other threads about the check valves and fittings. Didn't post about it since there were other threads to follow. Previous owner of thrower gave me both the thin and 5/8" pulleys, he had it mounted on his tractor when I looked at it last night to demonstrate it but for the life of me I can't remember what model it was. Once I finish my car I'll rehab the entire tractor!
