Default info on ags 2160

Greetings for the first time!

I am in the process of buying a house with the stipulation that the homeowner includes a AGS 2160 as part of the contract (reason is they are nearing a short sale and there is very little nego room)

I have perused the internet and find little info on this particular lawn tractor. Can anyone guide to a site that could shed some light on this unit; year built. hp, attachments, etc.....

Thanks in advance......as an aside...........49 years old and never even sat upon a garden tractor!!!!!!!! talk about a newbie!!!

Scott

The AGS 2160 was part of CC's 2000 series lawn tractor line (the line also included the 2130, 2135, 2140, 2145, 2165 and 2185). They were made from 1994 to 1999. The 2160 had a 6-speed gear direct drive transmission with AutoGear system (hence the AGS moniker), with a 16 hp Briggs Vanguard engine. The Autogear transmission was a gear drive with the gear selector lever on the right fender. There was also a forward and reverse pedal and there lies the problem with them. Even though the owner's manual cautions owners NOT to drive them as you would a hydrostatic, most did therefore damaging the clutch plates. The right way to drive one was to select the gear you wanted and then smashed the pedal for the desired direction (either forward or reverse) ALL THE WAY DOWN. With the pedals it was either all the way up or all the way. You were not supposed to control the speed with the pedal, that was done with the gear selector. But most owners control the speed with the pedals and clutch plates were damaged. Cub Cadet discontinued the Autogear after 1999.

A AGS 2160 will look like this HDS 2165: http://cubcadet.1.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=161 You will find the AGS 2160 in this 1994 Full Line Brochure:
http://cubcadet.1.forumer.com/index....pe=post&id=251

I have the 1994 2000 series brochure, but unfortunately it's over 2 meg and the hosting site I used for it is no longer in existence.

t-mo

thanks for the response! Any idea what attachments will work with the series? the house we are looking to buy is 1 acre with 80' drive. Southern Jersey does'nt get a lot of snow, howver a plow would be nice for the occasional foot we get.

as well, loads of leaves so I guess some sort of sweeper?

any chance this style of LT could more stuff? mulch?sand?gravel?

johnny bucket?

Scott,
There was a 42 inch snow blade and a 40 inch 2-stage snow thrower available and there may be a Johnny Bucket available. Bercomac will also have some attachments that will work on them. Drop me an email and I'll try and send you the 1994 brochure I have which will have more info on them. There was a 28 inch tiller attachment with electric lift available from CC, but those may be hard to find now.

T-mo,

Thanks for the input- glad to know I may have options with this unit.......

I searched the "johnny bucket" site and it made no mention of the ags 2160 unit specifically- though there is a section for "2000" series CC.

Are "series" LT's basically the same layout for attachments? Same frame attach points , same dimensions, etc.....

I have been out of the lawn care loop for over 12 years- we moved to the coast and all landscaping here is rock/gravel.....

I sure am looking to get my hands dirty again with mother earth!

Scott,
To be honest, I'm not sure how similar the older 2000 series are to the newer ones, though I would think the attachment points are the same. Check here for the newer 2000 series (2000 to about 2004/5):

http://cubcadet.1.forumer.com/index....pe=post&id=238

While the 2130, 2135, 2140 and 2145 were strictly lawn tractors, CC might had been thinking "yard tractor" with the 2160, 2165 and 2185 as they had the bigger tires and rims. But I doubt if anyone here would consider them true garden tractors.

You might check Bercomac and Johnny Bucket for attachments compatible with the 2160.

What I would do is keep it if it runs good, and still shifts good. They are very good mowers. And then find an older garden tractor, Cub, JD, Wheel Horse, etc., to do the dirty work. I would think, though, for snow removal the 2160 would do fine with chains and weights. Good luck.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
