Default Need advice, good ZT seat.

First off I have two torn disc in my lower back. This past week I took a couple of good bounces on my Scag with a standard seat. Which I think set my back off and I missed work on Friday. Still not doing any better today. So my question is, what good seats are any of you guys using?

Being in the material handling business the best seats I’ve seen for operator comfort that are used on forklifts and big equipment are made by Grammer. They make full suspension seats and even air seats and have models for zero turns, etc. You’re going to pay for them but sitting on a piece of equipment when the only give you have is in the tires and the seat, this makes a big difference.

My mower is a 72" cut Gravely ZT.
Original seat went all hard and cracked but still moved enough to pinch your cheeks.
It has the adjustable suspension base so I retained that.
Went looking on CL and found a pair of second row passenger full leather captains seats out of a conversion van. With a bunch of manual adjustments.
Being second row seats and owned by an older couple, they were virtually brand new, yet likely 20 years old.
Bought the pair for $100, installed one and stored the other for the future.
So far very comfy!

Clay, I don't have or run a ZTR. However I would think some sort of suspension seat system is best--not just a really thick slab of foam. I understand about a hard bounce--we have one farm tractor that has less seat suspension than a regular lawnmower seat. It has shocked me a couple times to the point I have really considered trying to put on something with suspension.

Let me toss out one observation--but not an accusation of your mowing. I see most people running ZTR machines run WIDE OPEN. Deere actually sold my cousin one and told him that's how it is supposed to be ran--I'm talking hydro speed. My take is just because engineers can make the machine take the abuse, the human body may not be able to. What I'm saying is, would slowing down help your back? I understand back and neck issues--my wife has had 2 surgeries and I've been to therapy a couple times. Just something else to evaluate in my opinion.

John you are correct. My back can't take those jolts from running WOT and hydro. I just came back from mowing at the farm and I slowed way down. The damage is done and every little bump hurt. My wife saw me get off the Scag and walked over to my SIL. I couldn't stand up straight. She got on the Cub and the SIL moved to the Scag. I was told to sit on the dock and watch the grandson's fish.

Clay I know where your coming from. I'm scheduled to have surgery this Wednesday the 23rd. Been on a walker for over a month now. I'm not looking forward to the surgery but if it gets me walking again, it will be worth it.

Clay,

Have you looked in the front fork suspension kits they have out now? Also, I took 2 compression springs from another tractor and mounted them on my seat pans 2 rear contact points.... That helped with the jolts from going over ruts in the backyard..

On my Bobcat I run about 9psi to soften the ride.... Have you tried filling your rear tires and see how that rides?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
