Default New 106 / 682 owner from NC

Hello all, I have been stalking the forums for awhile and finally picked up a couple cubs the other day. I got ahold of a 106 and a 682 . They both sat in a shed for 6 yrs . The 106 was parked in running and driving condition when the previous owner got the 682. It ran for about two years until a rod decided to take a break for some "air" and then it was parked. A Husqvarna zero turn took the place of both since then. I got them both for $450 and they are in good shape with cutting decks( minus blown engine of course) . With some good fuel and new battery the 106 is running very well. I'm looking for a replacement engine for the 682, hoping to find a used one on eBay, or get lucky and find one locally. One issue with the 106 is the PTO belt keeps jumping off, the pulleys are a bit worn on the shaft though. Couple of pics attached, let me know how I did, honest opinions please! Thanks and my name Brian

looks about right.
A mag-18 will bolt right in that 682 and make you a nice ride.
Just keep your eyes open for one.
Now there will be others right along that will mention of an updated engine,
and they will work well also, I just have a fondness for opposed twins.

I found some KT17 engines on ebay, no guts inside but those parts can also be had. So it looks like a for a few hundred I can have this engine back in business.

Go with a running Mag. Unless you are an expierenced mechanic I wouldn't mess with a kt. Even then I would still pick a mag.
They are around just look.

It is in your finical best interests to not fool with a KT series 1.
The series 2 and magnums are better.
The series 1's has a piss poor oiling system, that is why it pitched the rod,as did
many many of them.
Save the carb, it is a good adjustable one, you will want it on your next engine.

I looked for a while for an 18hp Magnum and never found one cheap. Closest I came was a Craftsman mower that was ready to cut grass for $400--too much $$ given the condition of the mower I wanted it for. Larger Horizontal crank engines in general are had to find these days, most stuff is vertical. Got any pulling clubs near you? Some of those guys like newer styled machines and chunk all the running works so you may find an engine with that crowd.
FWIW, I think you did well on the purchase price. Keep an eye on CL, you may come across another entire 6 or 782 reasonably.

So what other machines have this 18hp magnum ? I will look into the tractor pulling clubs, that's a good idea. I need to get the 106 cutting grass first though. Everytime I engage the pto the belt jumps off. The mule drive pulley bracket with the spring attached is kinda worn on the rod it rotates on which allows it to twist a bit when the belt is on . That is most likely why it jumps but the belt is old and dry rotted also.

1810 and 1811 had the 18 hp Magnum. They were basically newer versions of the 6 and 782. I think a slight wiring change must be done due to the ignition if you go with a Magnum engine. By the way, Magnums are pretty much an improved version of the older KT series. Having said that, some parts can be a little pricey/hard to find. A Magnum would probably be the simplest swap. A lot of folks have done newer engines, I think even some Vanguard swaps have been done. Bottom line if it will fit, it can be done if you are willing and have the skills for the modifications. I don't know for sure, but you may could sub a 20hp Magnum (M20) in place of a 18hp(M18)---but I think the crank sizes are different and would need a different PTO clutch. One of the reasons I think the M18 was suggested is that besides being simple, it wold be one of your cheaper swaps (assuming you have to buy a replacement engine). If you really want to pursue an engine swap, search he forums, or start a new thread on what you have and what your options are--you'll get more traffic there than in the "Welcome to OCC" section. Oh, if you pursue this--post lots of pictures!!!! Best of luck!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
