Broken JD
The guy that cuts the hay at my place broke his JD 6300. This is the second time he has had this happened to him this year. He pulls the bailer with the 6300. It has 4 wheel drive and what has been happening is that grass gets wound up around the drive shaft for the front axle until it has so much grass around the shaft that it breaks the oil filter for the transmission off. Very poor design. I spent about an hour the other day just cutting the hay off the shaft and still have more to do. Grass was wedged in so tight between the shaft and bottom of the frame that I had to disconnect the drive shaft from the front axle. Pile on the ground is what I have removed so far. Just trying to help the guy out. Think it needs some sort of belly shield.

Does the shaft still spin if its in 2wd? I'd say leave it off if it doesn't. You do have some pretty steep hills though.

We have been having trouble with the PTO shaft on the rear mount sickle mower wrapping this year at the tractor. It takes a while to cut all of it off. I could see it tearing a seal out or damaging the U-joint.

Seems that JD would have designed a cover to protect the moving parts.

Of course the nipple that breaks of is aluminum it's part of the housing and it's only $340.00 for the housing. Thinking a piece of conveyor belt from the local quarry hooked to the front of the tractor and hanging from some chains at the rear may work. Feel bad for the guy, he's struggling to make a few bucks selling hay.

Certainly agree about poor design. How tall is the hay? I like the piece of belt from chains idea.

Steve they rake it into a windrow, then the tractor pulling the bailer drives over the windrow to feed it into the bailer. The pile is about up to the front axle. Not much they can do to change this that I know of.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
