Default OHV Problem

My LTX1040 has 78 hours on it. This year I cut the lawn once and put it away as usual. The next week it started and ran for about 5 minutes and died. It was very difficult to try and restart and never did start. Figuring the battery was again bad even though I had it in the house on a trickle charger all winter, I purchased a new battery. That did not solve the problem.
Because the valve cover always leaked I took it off to inspect the overhead valve mechanism. To my surprise the exhaust valve shaft had unscrewed itself from the head thus keeping the exhaust valve closed all the time.
I can not see why Kohler would use a steel shaft into an aluminum head without some sort of locking device. The coefficient of expansion of these two dissimilar metals would require something.

Resetting the shaft and re-adjusting both valves got the engine running again.

The reason I thought the battery was bad was due to the initial failure of the alternator. This had to be replaced and luckily was still under warrantee.
If I ever get another machine it will not have a Kohler Courage engine.
Another gripe has to do with the caber of the front wheels. If you make a sharp turn, the tread of the tires digs up the sod down to the dirt. I have to make 4 and 5 point turn just so I don't have to keep reseeding.

thanks for letting me vent.

Briggs has the same issue with the INTEK engines (valve guides) so its just not Kohler....

The Courage also has a problem with losing Valve Seats...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
