Default 1641 Starting Issues

Hello all, my 1641 has been running with no issues. Today however, when I turn the key, I just get a low pitch whine like the starter is trying to turn the engine over. It never fires and it seems as though it is turning too slow to make the engine crank. Battery is fully charged.

Any thoughts on where to start diagnosing?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I would suggest, you start with your Battery Cable connections. Make sure they are clean, bright, and tight. This is for both cables, both ends.

Default 1641 Starting

Ok thank you for the response. I removed all cables and all connections are new or shined up and tight. Battery is at 13 volts. Still whining. Sounds to me like the starter is turning but not engaging flywheel. I have a short video of the sound during starting at the youtube link below. (disregard the humming sound in the background...I have a battery charger running) I appreciate your input.

Sounds like the Starter Bendix is not engaging the Flywheel. Looks like it is time to pull the starter. Examine the Bendix for dirt and debris. Clean if necessary. After cleaning, the Bendix my need some lubrication.

It either needs cleaning and lube or a new bendix. I have had a couple come apart at the joint between the teeth and housing.
May be a good time to remove engine and give it a good cleaning. It's easier to remove the starter that way. I've done both ways but if it's been awhile since you cleaned the engine fins, now would be the time to pull the engine. Good luck

I agree with Roland, --- it also sounds slow.
As a test, put a jumper cable from the positive battery post right to starter terminal and see if it starts.
if no joy, do as he suggests and remove/open up the starter and investigate.

There is an inspection cover on the blower housing next to the starter, remove it to see the condition of the bendix , more than likely it is broken as others have said.

My bet is that the teeth are gone on the bendix you could also be missing some teeth on the ring gear on the flywheel. BTDT on a 1641

Default Starter

Ok, I have checked all the voltage issues and am now convinced its either the starter, bendix or God forbid the flywheel. I am slower than most and just getting around to removing the starter. (I do plan to remove the inspection cover first to see what the bendix looks like)
I noticed that I can only access one of the two bolts holding the starter in place. Does this mean I have to remove the shroud on the engine to access the upper bolt? I have 2 service manuals and neither one addresses starter replacement so I appreciate your input.
Thanks
Rain

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
