Default 1512 fuel pump what not to buy

Just finished sleeve adaptor and was doing finally test after painting. Had tractor in middle of driveway. Tractor was idling good and started to sputter then stalled.

Usually when engine not running I can hear the fuel pump running when the key is turned. In this case nothing. Pulled out test meter and found 12+ volts to pump when key on but pump not working.

So now dead tractor in the driveway on a Sunday late morning. What to do? Quickly searched the internet and found many people using universal pumps on these tractors. Existing pump on tractor was not oem anyway so I pulled off the pump and went to auto parts store. First place had nothing. Second place had a Mr. gasket 12d. Quick look at the package seemed like the answer.

Came home opened the package (didn't read instructions) installed the pump. Everything looked good except wouldn't pull fuel consistently. When it would grab a little fuel I could see lots of small bubbles in the engine mounted fuel filter.

So I thought it could just have an air lock somewhere. Unhooked pump and was able to lower pump below gas tank. Everything started to work fine. Tractor started right up. As soon as I would lift the pump up to regular mounting location I would see bubbles in the engine mounted fuel filter.

Not right! So I opened up the instructions (which I should have done in the first place). To my surprise pump is supposed to be mounted below the tank and within 12 inches of the tank. So unless I relocate the pump to below the tank this pump will not work at the stock fuel pump location on a 1512. So stay away from a Mr gasket 12d in this application it will not work.

Found a new fuel pump from cub cadet was $275 (KB-68371-51210) but from a Kubota dealer a fuel pump (68371-51210) was only $75.

New pump on its way along with some other Kubota parts (air filter, fuel filters, etc). While I knew parts through the Kubota dealer where cheaper I didn't expect this much difference.

Always read the instructions... Kubota dealer was where i got my 1512 pump also. I still have the old one, which is still good, in case I find another without one.

A pump always pushes better then it sucks.
if you have air bubbles you are sucking air, gotten into the system through possibly loose suction side fittings/hoses/clamps.
( and that sucks)---or an empty gas tank

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
