Apparently someone in my neck of the woods thinks they are valuable. This is their CL ad picture and they are asking $500.

Gotta love people that want top buck but can't be bothered to pull it out of the weeds or wash it. I guess people don't know that presentation is everything.

I don't understand why some people have to act like that guy and berate someone asking for help and sharing a cool and rare tractor, even if it is a "cheap lawn tractor."

You have a nice SO76! I'd like to have one some day as well.

I for one would not kick that SO76 out of my shed. I have always thought they are cool. They are kind of rare especially in that good of condition. Also they are part of the history of International Harvester Corp. To the OP good luck in your search for the correct engine. Maybe you will get lucky and find one.

It's pretty simple, they are a lawn tractor, so they go in the lawn tractor section.

I moved it.

I asked dad if they ever sold any of these mowers and he thinks they sold only 1, but not for sure as it was 40 years ago. For some reason I think IH did a special paint job on a farm tractor for 76 as well. We have a very well worn IH Spirit of 76 summer hat/cap--I'll post a pic when I can find it.
Case is the only other major player I can think of to produce '76 equipment with special paint/decals.

IH did not offer a tractor in a SO76 paint scheme. They did the Cub Cadet, and a Scout SUV, but no tractor. Case was the only one that I am aware of that painted a farm tractor in a SO76 paint scheme.

Didn't know about the Scout, thanks for posting that!
Searching the net I found Massey and Steiger both had special paint editions for that year.

I thought Steiger did, I didn't know Massey did. Looks like it may have been an 1155. I can't find but only a couple examples of it though....

Could be a Cheap lawn mower....that determination is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I dont care what folks think and I dont go bashing on someone else threads either.

The Spirit Of 76 was made to celebrate our countries bicentennial....there were only 3500 made...there were to my knowledge only 3 sold in Mid Missouri this being the last one.

I have the original purchase receipt and manual. The tractor is as complete as you'll see. Paint is near perfect for its age.

I am a collector, and love tractors like this...no matter the brand.

I'll keep it original as its only that once. Just was trying to source an engine to match.

Thanks for all your help...and comments...at least some of you!

Tom

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
