Searching for SO76 Engine
Hello Everyone -
I recently picked up a very clean Spirit of 76 with all the correct parts except the engine. I'd like to find an original motor if possible. Does anyone maybe know someone who has one for sale? Should be a 7hp RED briggs. Thank you. Tom |

The color of the engine can be changed. What motor does it have in it? Model, Type and Code.....
I can find tons of "red" 7hp B&S engines. Do you even know what model 7hp you need? Or if the one you have is just painted black because it was replaced. It may be the right motor. |

The model 76 rolled out of the Factory with a B&S 170707-1231 engine in it.

Also, the guy I got it from...was the grandson of the original owner...who had the motor changed.

It's just a lawn mower. Vertical shaft BS engine, cheap trans and cheesy decals.

Ouch. The bicentennial was celebrated with this model my good man, and rightfully so. I'd love to have it as it is a real nice example of one

IIRC, that is a factory replacement engine. In the tractor world, that is as good as original. They (B&S) quit building the 7hp, and made the 8 to replace it. Just like Kohler did with their 7hp motor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
