Super garden tractors
What would be the better one to get...
2072 Super Garden Cub Cadet w/three point hitch, rear pto., 18hp, 50 inch deck engine governor does not work, fast idle or wide open. $900 or 2284 Cub Cadet Super Tractor, 23 horse, 60 inch cut . With 600 hours.. haven't seen but said ready to mow. $1200 neither one is paint perfect.

2284, the 2072 with a GOV problem means the GOV has failed requiring an engine rebuild and trust me you don't want to get into that.
Or buy both and re power the 2072.

I have 2 1811s, 3 or 4 blown 18 horse engines in barn, I'm a diesel mechanic. I could build em but it easier to buy another used or a new engine for 1600 or so. I think it runs about 6 or 7 hundred to do a like new rebuild.

Unless I am missing something, an 18hp in a 2072 is the wrong engine. So, somehow the first engine went kaput, now the replacement has done the same. Makes you wonder about the rest of the machine.

Tell us more about what you want/need to do. The 3pt and rear PTO are high dollar options, but most folks don't use them. Check the plastic real good on the 2284, that series is prone to having broken hoods, grills, and side panels. I just picked up one of those this winter but haven't had time to get it in the shop yet. Sam has posted tons of info on here about the "cyclops" series as folks refer to the 2284 and its kin. Search those as well as 18 and 2072 models. Might also want to search Haban 60" mowing decks, and Magnum engines. Lots of info here on all of those topics.

Mine has a Magnum 20 (M20), I think 99% of them were so equipped. I think I read here once where the very first 2072's still had Onan's like their 982 predecessor--there were just a few of these though. I could be completely wrong on that, but seem to remember it being a bit of a revelation on here.
I don't think there was much/any difference between a 1872 and a 2072 other than the engine--just 2 more HP. I think the engines are the same, one is just bored or stroked a bit more. To be honest, I've never had to fool around with many of those, just some minor work on the M20 in my 2072 and a "top end" rebuild on the M18 in my 1811. There are a few guys here that are very knowledgeable on those engines, don't know how well they pay attention to this category though. I don't know for sure, but I think it is pretty simple to drop a M18 in the place of a M20---don't take my word though, find someone that has! Some regard the cyclops (2284 in your case) as the last of the best Cadets. A little more HP and a finally more modernized driveline, adjustable seat and steering.
