Nothing like giving accurate information.

First thing if it has good spark as you say and will not fire on starting fluid does it have compression? Check for a exhaust valve stuck open, a blown head gasket or a hole in the piston. Years ago my first Cub Cadet, a 70 with the K161 died and would not start and when I checked compression and had none I pulled the head. The top of the piston had separated and was stuck up against the head. It never made a sound just died when I was mowing. Let us know what you find

Well This case turned out to be similar Tom,
The engine threw a rod & of course has no compression.
Will the 8hp kohler engine match up with everything?
If so I may try to find one that's running.
Thanks.

I guess from now on we need to start the diagnostic process with checking for compression.

you should have been at the auction I went to yesterday... lots of NOS Kohler Briggs and even Tecumseh goodies.... could have gotten what you need for that engine pretty cheap as compared to FeeBay.

Why doesn't your "mechanic" just rebuild the old motor?

yeah how bout it?
There were no Kohler engines at the sale, but tons of parts that would have made the rebuild real easy....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
