Default 2182 No Start After Sitting

I picked up another 2182 about a month ago. Fully optioned tractor, 3 pt, rear pto and front ports. Not nearly as nice as my other one, but a solid unit. Been chasing a starting problem. If you let the tractor sit for more than a day, it will not start without giving it the slightest sniff of ether. Once running it runs fine, no smoke, good power and seems normal. You can turn it off and on as many times as you want and run it as long as you want with no problems. If it sits from the afternoon until the next morning it will start fine, but give it about 24 hours or more then its back to the ether again. I am wondering if the fuel pump is bleeding off or something strange like that. Trying to get some thoughts on this before I start chasing parts.

Is the choke cable adjusted so that it closes the butterfly all the way?

Even if the fuel pump was bad, it should have enough gas in the carb bowl to start, and run, until the pump sends it fuel.

Make sure of the choke like Jon said. Also the fuel shutoff solenoid may not be opening after sitting awhile. Maybe turn the key to “on” then give a couple of taps on the carb then try to start it.

Choke is adjusted correctly. I have tried tapping on the carb, but no luck there either.

I have the same thoughts on the fuel pump. Fuel in the bowl should be enough to start the machine. I have pulled the fuel line and pump puts out plenty of fuel.

Just for laughs, instead of starting on the key switch, just leave the ignition "on" and jump the solenoid and see if it'll start that way without your starting fluid.

Both of my 2182s have relays on the starter. For about 10$ you can put one on.

This tractor has a relay on the starter. I should clarify that the engine cranks fine, it just won't fire. Strange that I can jump the solenoid and it fires right off.

I have an 18 Command that behaves just like your tractor (aside from the one mentioned in the link above). I think the current is dropping off the fuel solenoid when the key is in the "start" position.

If you jump the starter instead of using the key switch, I believe you are bypassing the problem. By the same token, the starter fluid makes the engine start/run and gives you time to release the key to "on" and it continues to run.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
