I found everything from dogs, to Lady Gaga. But nothing about cutting pipes.

I took the plunge and did it by hand. I knew I could do it. I cut it with a hacksaw right along the weld very carefully to not go too deep and it came right apart. Preserved the lip and everything so it can slide back in and get welded back up. The o-rings are different from what I have here in my 30 most common sizes kit of orings so I will have to go shopping. But here are some photos.

Can that plastic piece be replaced? I assume it is supposed to keep dirt out of the oring. It has a crack in it. I don’t see how to get it out. D45AD549-59D9-402C-876A-5898F7D6139A.jpg

That’s a wiper. Theres an internal groove it sits in and should just pop out. They’re normally one piece and poly.

Oh ok, so just grab it and pop it out? The cylinder for my Jacobsen that I worked on before once I took the fittings out the top part of the cylinder popped out from the inside and it had a wiper seal up in there that was cone shaped. This one appears to be different and part of the unit. I'll have to figure out where to get that wiper.

Is the nylon part a back up washer?
Is it cracked or slit for removal? ( cannot make head or tail of the pix) |

--edit--- I added a zoomed and cropped picture of the one I already posted. It doesn't look like a split for removal, it looks like it has cracked. ring.jpg

I am curious Steve, how's the bore of the cylinder look? Any scoring? When the cylinder went on my 1572, steering was non-responsive ONLY when the cylinder was in the center of the range while going straight ahead. When trying to navigate from straight-ahead to a corner, turning the steering wheel did not make the direction change for the wheels to where I wanted to go UNLESS I moved the steering wheel very rapidly with a quick snap which, I think, momentarily caused more fluid to go into the cylinder than could leak past the seal and made it turn/move. Response on the ends of travel while travelling around a corner was normal.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
