I hit all the bottom areas with the wire cup on the grinder. Then a couple coats of rust metal primer, then 3 coats of flat Rustoleum black. Hope to be able to pick up a piece of steel for a cutting edge mid week.

I should paint the whole thing right now but other projects are also stairing me in the face.

Hi Steve! Nice find on the 401. I've got one on my 2072 and love it. Put a new edge on it and you could lay a couple of small tack welds on the top side of the cutting edge to the spoon side of the blade just for a little added strength. If the welds are placed right, a few minutes with a disc grinder will be all that's needed to cut them when it's time to flip the edge over.

Well, I found a different cylinder that was cheaper and a better fit. Works awesome! Sorry for the lousy pic.

Steve. I've got an idea, but need to know how thick the combination of the roll plate and that back brace are. Plus, how far does the cutting edge extend beyond the roll plate. Not the length, but the cut.

Picked up a 4 inch wide x 1/4 thick by 55" long piece of steel yesterday. Still working on a plan to mount it for a new cutting edge. Off work this week on stay-cation with wife and kids. Had part of the afternoon to myself so I cleaned up the lift frame and lift rod. Then commenced rattle bombing them. Three coats rust metal primer then three coats Rustoleum Flat black. Mother nature was sending in a t-storm forcing me to a premature end. Took the cylinder off and more of the front lift parts to ready them for a clean up and paint.

Decided to tear the blade completely appart. It was very sloppy in the lower pin holes. Found the 3/4 rod very worn on both sides. Then I go busy rattle bombing.

Cylinder is supposed to be black too.

It's funny you put bags overy the hoses. Like paint would hurt them. I would have just taken them off.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
