Default Mower deck - 50C vs 54"

For those of you with experience with both the 50C and 54" #324 mower decks; which one is better? I'm refering to cutting speed, clean out, and overall quality of cut. Any thoughts on the performance between the two decks is appreciated.

I'll be honest, I don't have any experience with the 50C deck. I do have plenty with the 44C though, and with the newer style 48 & 54. I will say this, I won't be going back to a 44C any time soon for my main grass killer. The 48 & 54 both have not only the 4 corner gauge wheels, but have gauge wheels under the deck in the front and rear of the center. I about have to try to get the decks to gouge the ground. They do, however, seem to take a little more oomph to push. Without getting into an engine debate, the 44C's I've used have never really had an issue with bogging the tractor down. The 48 & 54 will make an 18hp Command bark in thick, tall, wet grass. I have an 1864 and a 2284 I've used my 54" decks on. The 18 does just fine 90% of the time, but I have a patch of grass in my backyard that grows thicker, faster, and stays wetter (under shade most of the time, I've had puddles before sitting in it) than the rest. That's where the extra 4hp the 2284 has comes into play. The 18hp I have to slow down a touch, the 22hp walks right through it. Cuts clean, good cleanout of the deck, and projects it plenty far enough for my needs. Hope this helps!!

I use both and the 54" in my experience cuts better, but the baffles in my old 50C are long gone so that will account for some of it not cutting as good as it should. The only drawback to the 54" is the build up of grass on top, just needs cleaned off more, but is not that big a deal. I like them both. Hope this helps. Greg

Edit: The clean out is about the same IMO.

I have a 50c on my 782 & the 54 on my 1861. I think the 54" cuts nicer and throws the clippings better, and the caster wheels seem to help keep the cut level. I haven't really noticed either tractor overworked from either deck.

If I could retrofit a 54" under my 782 I would.

Put a front axle from an 1863/1864 on your 782 and it'll fit under. And better yet , it'd work

Would there be any issues attaching this 54" deck to a 2072? It's not listed as one of the models it's meant to attach to on PartTree , wondering if it would work anyway. I've been looking for a 50C but if this will work I can broaden my search.

Yeah, I know it's been done, I just don't know if it's worth the money and effort.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it would physically fit but the PTO on the 2072 is the wrong size.

Depends how easy it is to find the axle and how much you value your time

It should play, I just looked up a 2284 and the 324 is listed as a mower for it. You'll probably need to change your PTO to the larger PTO used on the later tractors.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
