Default KT17 to replace Briggs 582 special

Hi Everyone,

Can a KT17 from a 782 bolt right in place of a 16HP briggs found in the 582 special? I think it will but might need an adapter to fit the flywheel. Anyone ever done this before?

Thanks,

82srule

I realized that after looking at the wiring diagram. If I'm right, looks like I should only need to run a wire from the R terminal of the key switch to the + terminal of the coil.

I also found out the PTO clutches are different and will need to find one for the KT17 as it has a 1-1/8" shaft and the Briggs only has a 1" shaft.

The ignition/battery switch is different. Order one for the 782.

Yep, after looking at the wiring diagrams; I'd have to get a 782 key switch. But it also appears I'd have to get a PTO switch and seat switch for a 782 as well?

Thank you for your help.

There are those, that for "testing purposes" negate the seat switch.
also make sure you are comparing the correct wiring diagrams as there are 2 for the 782's.
One early diagram for IH built tractors and another modified diagram when MTD/CCC took over.
Without looking, I think your 682 is IH built, so compare accordingly

Got it all switched over. Was able to keep the original key switch and installed a push to start button. Only had to cut the regulator charge wire because of the connection. Rest was just removing the starter wire from the wire harness for the push button and adding a wire from the PTO switch to the push button switch, and another wire from the PTO switch to the ignition coil. Seat switch had to be bypassed. Also installed an extreme pto clutch. Everything has been working great over the past few months.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
