Default New IH Planter!!

Well, had a very exciting day. Been planning the trip today since last week. Some of you may recall that last year I finally got my Brinly planter set up and planted the garden with it. I'm a farm boy, and expected it to perform like a "big" planter, just on a smaller scale. I was mildly disappointed. It didn't do terrible, just not like I had hoped. I had been looking for a 295 IH row unit planter since I bought the Brinly, but hadn't been able to find one. I joined an IH group on FB, and decided to ask the group if anyone had any 295 units they would sell. Lo-and-behold, a guy from Indiana about 135 miles from me had 2 he said he would sell! Called my buddy Chris, who also wanted one and told him I had found a pair. We both jumped for joy, as the price was beyond fair. Made plans to make the trip today and went and got them!

One unit was right off the planter, and the other had been mounted to a homemade cart for replant work. I took the unit on the cart. Chris and I both plan to make them mounted for use on a Brinly adapter. We both also plan to take the large box off and make a smaller "can" for garden planting. No need for a 1.5 bushel seed box for 2lbs of seed, lol. We even got the Gandy insecticide/fertilizer boxes for both units!!

I'll update with more pics as I progress on the build, but here is a couple shot of it in the truck. Sorry I didn't take more, but it was cold and dark when we got home.

Thanks John!

Let's not talk about "deer hunters". Those SOB's are the ones who drove the price of these units through the roof!!! I've got nothing good to say about those guys. In my opinion, if you can't find it in the woods eating what god gave them to eat, you aren't a hunter. But..... I'll just stop there. I'm just so glad I found them for NOT $500 per unit. They were a "Lew" deal for the going rate they are right now.

Same thing here. Every enterprising weld shop bought up all the old 4 and 6 row planters and cut them up primarily to sell to deer hunters, although they did make some nice one row units that gardeners bought to go behind small tractors. I've even seen a 4 row machine cut down to a 2 row trailer type with the fertilizer boxes still on it. Those self contained units like you have that will fit on tool bars get pricey real quick--especially if they have green paint.

That's pretty cool. How big of a garden do you plant with it and what types of seed will it handle? Corn, I assume. What about radishes, or beets?

How big is the garden...... ummm.... I stepped it off one time because people ask me that. I think it was like 48' by like 140'?? I don't remember.

Here, how big does it look? LOL!
Just what is plowed....

Yes, the IH planter will of coarse do corn and beans. Likely other "large seed" crops. Radishes, carrots, lettuce, I plant all that with a little Earthway planter. I only put out like one row each of those small seed crops, when I do plant them, so it isn't worth the time and effort to load up a bigger planter. I never could get good population with the Earthway on corn and beans. I got a really good stand (with good population) of beans with the Brinly last year, but wasn't happy with the seed placement, or uniformity of depth. Corn, the Brinly did horrible on seed spacing and depth. Too deep, too shallow, plant 4 in 5" then nothing for 13". Since I rotary hoe and cultivate the crop (with the Cubs) I need a high population to make up for any loss using those tools, and need the stand to be uniform so that it canopy's fast. I can only cultivate until the crop is so tall because the CC's sit so low, so I need them to canopy quickly. In the "bare" spots, the weeds grow and then I have to weed by hand. On that large of a garden, I don't have the time it takes to hand weed. I would have to spend everyday out there just weeding if I didn't have the CC's! I do enjoy my garden. Even if it is just for fun, and to play "farmer" with a GT!

Nice score. I also have toyed with that idea. Glad you found one.

If you ever have the chance to get one, do it. The seed plates are MUCH cheaper and easier to get than those of a Brinly/Cole planter. Plus, being a double disk opener, they are just an overall better planter. I'm glad I finally found one too! Only took a couple years of looking/waiting for a good deal! I never had any issue finding a whole planter, but didn't want to spend $1000 or more to get one unit. Then there was the whole, make a bunch and sell them factor.... but that takes time and money too, so I just waited until I could find just 1 (or in this case 2) unit's for sale. Guy didn't even have them for sale, just offered them to me when he saw I was looking for one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
