Burning up belts on LT1040
Hello, I'm new to this, or any, "forum". So I'm not even positive I'll be able to find my way back to this " thread" to see any answers to my question. But here we go. My father bought a cub cadet lt1040 a few years back. And just now, within the last few years. Its been eating about 5-6 belts a year. @ almost $50pc, the summers are getting expensive. He's taken this lawn tractor to Cumberland Outdoor Power countless times, and they have replaced every pulley, and bracket on it. I think the only y his left to replace, other than the actual deck itself. Is the 2 springs keeping tension on the pulleys. He's got more $ into fixing this deck now than if he'd just bought a new one. Now he's had a few of his friends look at it, and I'm not sure if all the parts are there. I can see where the problem is, I think. The belts are rubbing together just underneath the angled pulley going back to the PTO. I'm just wondering if there is another spring missing to keep the belt off of itself. A picture would be great. I've already downloaded the parts schematic. But some of it I can't make out. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

Never worked on one so I did a Google search, maybe some of this info will help. Take a look at the U-tube video, think the guy may be on to something.

In the meanwhile, instead of burning $50 belts, try finding your belt equivalent here:
http://www.vbeltsupply.com/metric-we...pped-belts/spz Been using one on my 1450 with no issues for 2 years at 1/5th of the price of a OEM one. Edit: re-read your first post and saw your internet experience may be limited. Here's a direct link to non-OEM less expensive belts which may work for you: http://www.vbeltsupply.com/kevlar-co...vlar-belt.html http://www.amazon.com/754-04045-MTD-.../dp/B003E3OJO8 |

Thank you to you fellas that have helped. I think I've got the problem figured out. I think that Cumberland outdoor power have been selling us belts that are too long. Causing the springs to be ineffective, and the belt to rub against itself. So they can sell more expensive belts. We are going to order one from the site I was given from a earlier reply. A huge thank you to that fella. I just don't know yet the size belt I want to order. Again. Thank you to everyone for the advise. Cumberland outdoor power has done shady shit to my dad before. I believe they are crooks.

There are a lot of places to purchase belts. I've had great success from Ebay sellers as well as Amazon. Don't overlook those sources for blades as well and just about any other part. The dealers are always charging at least twice as much for most parts that are available online.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
