Default Picked up 129

Picked up a 129 this week, looked fair and the price was negotiable due to the possibility of a bad transmission, turns out the pin at the hydro input shaft was sheared ! A lucky person would have just needed to replace the pin , needless to say I'm not that lucky person, turns out the hydro pump was bound up ! The PO indicated it leaked a little hydro fluid and needed to add occasionally. Turns out it leaked a lot of fluid I would bet it was run with a low fluid level long and often causing the upper piston retainer ring to fail and scatter a couple piston caps jamming up the input shaft ! That leads me to ask where do I find a retainer ring and about 3 pistons with the brass caps ? Anyone have a parts pump ?

You would need to replace the whole piston block with a used one if you are going to do that. That said, it's not worth the trouble. Used pumps are a dime a dozen..... or at least $100 for one, and you can find dozens of them. Just get a used pump. Your 129 is manual lift, so you need a non-ported pump. Might get one of these cheaper. Put up an ad in the wanted section.

Oh, and I'm not jumping on you hard for this..... but you managed to post this in the "Welcome" section under "Forum Rules". I moved it. Please make sure you find the proper section in the future to post in.

Is it due to machining differences and to tolerances that make it not feasible to just replace a couple pistons ? Just hated to junk what appears as an otherwise good pump. First time I've pulled one of these pumps apart in 40 some years of messing with this stuff, thought they were bullet proof till I seen this one ! Sorry bout the post in the wrong place , must have got excited !

Yes. Pistons are mated to the block at the factory. You really aren't supposed to even swap places with them. They need to go back in the same hole. Oh, guys will tell you they have done it and it was fine. But the manufacturers tell you not to, the books tell you not to, they teach you not to when you go to school for them...... so, you get the picture.

Believe me, your better off not using any of the piston parts of that pump. (Pump or motor blocks.) If it was run low on fluid, the damage you see isn't the only damage. Save pump if you have room. Charge pump is probably fine, and so are the shafts, case, and other "hard" parts that do sometimes fail/get damaged. (Such as a "wollered" hole on the in the input shaft.)

Looks to be a really nice tractor!! Congrats!!

They are correct.... you could fix that pump but as easy as used ones are to find I wouldn't fool with it..

I'd say buy that used pump from Tim and maybe do a set of seals and the cork gasket and be done with it!

Ive only been in a few over the years but they were only for seals and one was for a shaft... I was always careful not to mix any of the plates and pistons...

IF you could buy those parts they would be expensive and far more than a good used pump

send us some more pics of the tractor!

I might think after going through all the work to put replacement parts back in your old pump, you might want to buy another pump! But, I'm going to put this out here anyway,

I had bought a 1250 from the scrap yard that evidently looked like it was dragged by the looks of the pump inside the hydro unit.

Wow that's a clean one! Somebody took really good care of it through the years. As others have said, replace the pump, it's just good insurance. Most likely there is metal filings from the failed parts throughout the entire hydro, not to mention the possible damage to other internals due to the oil starvation. Congrats on a nice looking 129.

Despite its problems, it looks to be a well taken care of 129. Congrats!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
