Dumb question I know but Did you verify that the piston is moving?

ok the valves are not stuck, but are they closing tightly?
Usually a worn engine will have low compression but not complete loss of compression.
in the absence of any compression, either the piston is not moving, or the valves not closing, -------------
-----------or the spark plug is removed, Ha,LOL!

My K161 (7 hp), which is an early spec number, DOES have ACR.

Thanks for the confirmation, Ironman. So if it has ACR, doesn’t that mean the compression will not check properly?

This is directly from the Kohler K Series Service Manual....

"Compression Test
Because these engines are equipped with an
automatic compression release system (ACR), it is
difficult to obtain an accurate compression reading.

To check the condition of the combustion chamber
and related mechanisms, physical inspection and a
crankcase vacuum test are recommended."

I'd put it back together and start it. I believe more tractors are scrapped out because of "repairing them" than wearout.

Share some pix, you got a nice tractor it sounds like.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
