I would use black permatex on the pan gasket but you do what you want.

Yes, I don't believe the gasket is going to leak one way or the other. Personally, for myself I use a thin bead of the grey permatex applied to each of the mating surfaces, AND a pan gasket! I have gotten away from using the Indian Head shellac because it tends to become brittle.

Finally got her back together. I had a time getting the engine back in with the cradle bolted to it. Just couldn't get it in that way, had to install the cradle first and then bolt the engine on. Ended up being twice the work, but worth the wait.
It is really smooth now. Ended up using the upper mounts on the bottom and had a few others laying around for the top that are original too. Rebuilt the carb, squeezed the front axle frame back together and installed a nest axle pin in. As others suggested, just did some maintenance and cleaned up everything. Drives great and is tightened up with few rattles that these Quierlines usually have. Only problem is that this one doesn't start as quick as my 1250. It cranks more when you first start it. Maybe the carb isn't adjusted just right. Seems like it should be fattened up a little on the low speed side. Any suggestions?
