So how does the auto gear work? I see the fwd and rev pedals so do they operate similar to a shuttle shift on a larger tractor or is it completely different?

Me too. I was going on the basis of a "typo", 2565 instead of 2165.

The AGS auto gear system is a 6 speed manual trans. In front of the trans is a forward and reverse wet clutch. You put it in the proper gear for what ever speed you want then push the forward or reverse pedal all the way down and hold it all the way down. What kills them is that people think they are a variable speed hydro so they don't keep the clutch fully engaged. Even a lot of the dealers didn't understand that they weren't a hydro so they instructed new owners incorrectly. I was at a Cub dealer the other day and they had an AGS tractor in the shop. The salesman told me it was a hydro, I had to educate the boy.

This is an exploded view of an early design 2160 clutch. For what it's worth I understand that the early design 2160 clutch's can be shimmed. The early clutch has caps with 3 bolts that can be removed the later design does not have the removable caps. I remember a thread years ago on MTF telling how to do it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
