Default #26 or #30 carb..whats the diff?

Gentlemen;

Ive seen 10-12-14hp kohlers with both 26 or 30 carbs...whats the difference between the two? They both look like the same carb.

The 26 & 30 are the bore of the Venturi in millimeters (ie: 26 = 26mm, etc)

I have seen and read all sorts of weird combination's. I would use the correct model (or size) as specified by Kohler.

Metalrain, we are getting into venturi effect and probably a debate as bad as which oil to use. In theory the 26 mm carb should have better throttle response and work more efficiently at the lower end of the torque curve. The 30 mm should be better at higher rpm and with larger displacement engines.

I have a spare "30" laying around. I've been toying with giving it a shot on my K241 in hopes that I have more high rpm power to get thru some tall grass on my neighbor's outlot. Might the 30 help in this situation?

A stock 30 carb will draw in more air/fuel mixture than a stock 26. Putting a stock 30 carb on a stock 10 horsepower motor will hurt the performace more than help it.

A 14 horsepower Kohler with a small exhaust valve may get by with a 26 carb. A 14 horsepower Kohler with a big exhaust valve will not in the long run. The motor could be on the lean side. Motor that are on the lean side will run hotter and burn a piston, valve, head or a combonation of all 3.

One can make a 26 carb flow more air/fuel flow better than a stock 30 carb. It will take serious mods to the carb and motor to do that.
