Default QA42A...fail

Had to put up my dumba** of the day. Picked up a qa-42a for a hundred bucks earlier in the year. Nice piece, cheap enough, and I wanted a blower. First “big” snow of the season today. I mounted it up earlier in the week, got a belt today. Put the belt on, took me a while(p.o. changed the gearbox pulley so was unsure of the exact length I needed). Waited anxiously all day for enough to try it out. Finally got enough to make it worth going out. Warmed up the 1812, bundled up and went to it. Was impressed how well it did, as my dad has a 450 on an 1811, and that’s the last tractor mount blower/thrower I’ve used. Anyway, made about 3 passes, trying to keep the auger loaded and about halfway through the 4th I smelled that smell. And then saw the belt fly. Damn. The bolts to snug the gearbox plate(?) up were junky and what I thought was tight and right were loose and wrong. So I’ll get some new bolts and another belt and hope to try again.

The bolts that hold the gearbox plate on are on a spacer. The gearbox plate is supposed to be loose. You can't tighten them up to hold the belt. The adjuster bolt is supposed to have a lock on it to keep the adjuster from backing off. So...... better look your machine over again.

Definitely no lock. A bolt through that existing hole near the tensioner should fix the trick! Thanks!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
