Default 44A deck spindles

I need to replace the spindle bearings on my 44A deck. Parts Tree shows them at $183.27 each. The part # is IH-ST745 and it updates to #759-3479P which looks nothing like my spindles. Has anyone updated them to another style? I don't remember when I had them apart if the bearings are removable from the shaft or not. I pumped them full of grease at the time and they felt smooth but after running the mower they were pretty noisy. Any help appreciated.

Jim, I get new, original style bearings from Sterling Farm Equipment in Sterling or Medina Ohio. They are roughly $80.

The early style are what's called water pump bearings they look like the bearings in the pic. The later spindles use tapered cup and cone bearings.

Post a pic of what you have or get us the numbers off the deck. If you have the later style spindles you can replace just the bearings and seals.

Unhappy 44A deck spindles

I'm pretty sure mine are the so called "water pump bearings". I'll have to get the deck out and disassembled. It was originally on the 108 I restored but I want to install it on the 1440 Hystat that I had the breather problem with. I'm working on a different cub right now so when I get this one serviced I'll start on the spindle bearings. It doesn't look like there is any economical fix at this point.
I'm just trying to get something lined up for it at this point. I thank you all for the input and I will be back when I get started on it.

You may run into a problem with the center pulley. The 1440 would use a wider belt and the 1440 has the large diameter PTO.

What is the original deck for the 1440? If the shell is shot you may be able to salvage the spindles for the 44. Post some pics of both decks.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
