Piston rings on k301
I ordered a set of stens rings for my piston. I attempted to install them and could not get them to squeeze down enough to get into the block. I removed them and after close inspection I found what looks like spacers in the grooves of the 3rd groove and 2nd groove. are these to be removed or to be left in? The old rings were kohler rings.

Those are to be removed......
And how would you know the old rings were Kohler rings? They aren't marked..... |

As for knowing if they were kohler rings or not I made a "SWAG".

My next question would be, why were they on the piston? I have never seen a spacer under rings before. Just curious. I do have an idea but maybe the pro can chime in.

The one of bottom was used with the cast iron oil ring. The one on the second ring, I have not ever seen on a Kohler. I'm assuming it had a cast iron ring in the second spot also.

Thanks MR J that clears it up. Yes the second ring was cast also. Now I will know if I run across that again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
