Default Update on 100

Been a cold winter here in the south, but things are getting better. Got the little guy disassembled and parts separated. It's going to take a lot of work and time, but I have been able to work on a few things.
I rebuilt the pto after getting it off the shaft, the set screws were impossible to get out and I had to pull it off the shaft with a 3 jaw puller, in the process I bent the throw out levers and broke a tip off the center spring. I locked the pto a vice and used the drill press to drill the set screws out. Cleaned all the rust off it, resurfaced the plates, new bearing, replaced center spring, new clutch disk, found a good set of throw out levers on flee bay. It looks brand new and should work well.DSCN0532.jpg

I also rebuilt the drive clutch pics of that later.

Default few more pics

After tare down, I decided to work on the small parts since it was too cold to get outside and sand blast the big stuff.
I rebuilt the drive clutch, de-rusted the pressure plates and surfaced them on my belt sander, ordered new throw bearing, teaser spring, and clutch disk, painted it and now it's ready to goDSCN0558.jpg

I also got the gas tank cleaned a primed, the tank was solid rust and lacquer inside. I tried cleaning it with CLR with no luck, tried putting nuts in it and doing the shaking thing, it got some out but not much. I was to the point of buying another tank until I watched a you tube about using muriatic acid. I thought what do I have to loose. I followed this guys instruction and IT WORKS and worked really fast, the tank is clean and shines inside.

Nice work.

Thanks for the tip on Muriatic Acid. I've got a tank that I'll need to do that on as well.

All looks good and thanks for the pics showing your progress

John

Nice work Larry. I’m ready for warmer weather to arrive so I can get back to painting my 100.

John
Thanks John, one thing to be sure of if you use the acid is to make sure it is rinsed out really good, After a good rinse with water, then I used hot water and dawn dish soap for another wash. Then I dried the inside with a hair drier to make sure all the water was out. I then mixed some oil and gas and put it in and let it set over night. Next day dumped the oil/gas out and it is still shines inside.

I was wondering how you prevented "flash rust" ....the mixture of oil/gas would leave enough film to prevent that .

Thanks! I'll try this.

Default 100 project on hold

Thought I would do an up date on the 100 project. I had to put the project on hold for a few weeks/months. In late march I started having severe pain in my low back and both legs making it almost impossible to walk or stand.
I went to the spine center and after testing, was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in the 3-4-5 lumbar. In April I had a procedure where they do the pain shots in the areas of the lumbar followed by PT, It did relive a little of the pain but the down side was, I lost function in my legs and have to use a walker to move around.
I recently had an appointment with a surgeon and he recommended since the shots and PT hadn't worked that I have surgery to fix the problem.
So i'm scheduled to under the knife in a couple of weeks. After that it will be 4 to 6 weeks of recovery before I can maybe get back to my cubs and things I love to do.

Wish me luck guys.

Wow, that sucks, Bama. Hope the surgery helps and that you have a speedy recovery.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
