Newbie
Hello all
Guy here. I'm a first time ever owner of a vintage lawn tractor. And I'm excited. I found this gem (1962 cub cadet original ) in a neighbors yard for sale and had to have her. I have no experience with lawn tractors but I've restored many vehicles already. My last project was a 1964 holiday rambler complete restro from the frame up- but that's another forum. I'm looking for ideas and suggestions on my restoration, also issues i might run into. The one thing i would like to do is increase power. It has the k161 now I'd like to have more like 18 horse. Is that an easy upgrade? Thoughts concerns issues? Let's hear them! Thanks in advance. P.s. how do you post a picture here? |

Welcome to OCC!
I wouldn’t modify an Original. There are easier Cubs to put an 18hp in. The benchmark of O restorations http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=34439

Welcome to OCC............
The Original is a Garden Tractor, and not a lawn tractor. It is only 7 HP but it will handle ground engaging equipment. I agree, it would be best to keep the Original as original. You have really have to butcher up the tractor to fit any larger engine in it. The replace engine for the Original is a K181 - 8HP but that is about it. IF.....you are looking for higher HP tractors, start looking at Cub Cadets with the Wide Frame (WF) that started with the 1x8/9 Series tractors. Way better success.

Don't get suckered with the big HP game played these days. The old 7 has plenty to get the job done.

I guess the better question would be , do you think the original can handle towing my self powered mow and vac leaf collector? It weighs about 345lbs empty.

Welcome to OCC.
Yeah that's the one that was on CL. You did well in my opinion. Yes, you can pull just about anything with wheels you can pull with a higher HP tractor. Sure the Original is a belt drive, but you'll lose traction, before you run out of power. That is a clean original tractor. If it runs good as it was advertised, leave it original. Find a old outside dog for restoration, if you're looking for a project machine. Congrats on a fine looking Original. If you're looking for a higher HP tractor, and one to restore, look me up, we can make a trade of some sort.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
