Steel blocks under engine
Hello All! Got a question! I redid a basket case 18/2072 Super. It has a M18 engine with a 2072 hood. When I took the engine out there was square steel blocks at each mounting bolt beween the engine and mounting plate. I have never seen these before but then as I said this was a Freebie basket case Super. I restored it to look like a Red 982, now I got 2 Red 982's. I put the engine in with out them just to be able to move it so I can my pulling tractors out for pulls but season is over now and pulled motor out to replace leaking seals. Do I need these blocks in there for PTO belt length or can I leave them out? Any info as always is Greatly Appreciated! Bill:

There are four round spacers, being: 950-3009. They are needed to maintain the Drive Line geometry. If they are square, that is a PO modification.
The height of the spacer(s) is: .469". You can use those square spacers and add washers until you reach near .469". Or order new ones. They are still available from CC. This is what I did...... http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27123&highlight=950-3009

If you have a way to make them, I can give you the dimensions.
I milled a flat bar to replace the spacers on my 2072, because they had worn into the aluminum crankcase some. The idea was that the increased surface area of the flat stock would prevent any further wear to the crankcase.

Might want to check out “shaft collar “ with set screws.
I used these on my 782 for spacers. McMaster Carr sells them for around $1.20 each. If I remember correctly I used the ones for 7/16” shaft which are 7/16” thick, with an od of 7/8”.

Spacers
Thank You Guys! The info was very much Appreciated! Who ever made these spacers did a good job. I measured them and they where .467. As it turned out, what I thought was a seal leaking turned out to be a broken rubber line from the air cleaner to the breather. The rubber disc in the breather had the tab broken that holds it in place and was laying on the mesh. The gasket for the oil line plate on the block was removed and silicone was slopped on and didn't cover all the edges! Local Cub dealer had everything and should be back running tomorrow! Thanks Again! Bill.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
