Default 1863 followed me home....now I need help!!

I currently have an 1864 with about 1000 hours and a newer motor with about 200 hours on it. I had a friend who was cleaning out their barn today and asked me if I was interested in their 1863 with plow and snow chains that had been sitting the last 5 year(it has 868 hours). I said yes and paid them the $200 they were asking for it (good deal?). They were the original owner and always had it serviced and gave me a stack of paperwork with it. The problem is that it won't start and stay running. If you spray some starter fluid in it it will start and run for about 5 seconds then die. It has fresh gas and spark. What should I look for and try. Also the people I got it from said before the put it away it would run and mow find and then get hot and die. Then you would have to wait on it to cool down before it would restart. Any ideas there? Thank for all the help.

I would start by checking the fuel flow from the tank and it's a safe bet that the carb needs cleaned/rebuilt.

Good to know I got a good deal. Now to just get it cleaned up and running. Maybe I'll get some time later this week or weekend.

I might just replace all the gas lines and clean the carb. How hard are those 2 to do?

Remove and clean the fuel tank. Replace rubber bungs at tank valves. Valves probably clogged.

Do you have a part number for the bungs at the tank valves? and where can i get them?

would it be these? https://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Pack-Fuel...-/332246257475

I also seen that one of the fuel shutoff valves knob was missing so i might replace that also.

one more question. will i need any new fuel line fittings? or are they all reusable?

UPDATE. i just talked with my local Cub Cadet dealer and they said the shutoff valve is no longer available but they should have something in stock that will work. and they also have the 935-0149 bushings in stock (4.25 each where you can get 3 for 4.94 on eBay) If it's easy enough i might change them on my 1864 also since i don't know if they have ever been changed.

Check your fuel line real close. Sometime it gets mushy on the inside. Mike

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
